The English Reading Comprehension workbooks each have twenty lessons.  Lessons include practice with fluency, vocabulary, visualization, comprehension, phonology and phonics.  There is an answer key at the end of each lesson. There are six easy to use Comprehension workbooks.  In Books 1-3:

Each lesson begins with a vocabulary page.

The next page in the lesson is a practice page for the new vocabulary words.

The third page in the lesson is a visualization page.

The fourth page in the lesson is a story to practice fluency.

The next page in the lesson works with developing comprehension skills.

The third page in the lesson is a fill in the blank page so students can practice using the words from the word list from the first page of the lesson. Fisher Hill has many easy to use workbooks to help teachers with Zoom classes and lessons.  In this blog, I will talk about Fisher Hill’s easy to use workbooks for ESL Zoom classes and lessons. There are four workbooks in this ESL series called English for the Spanish Speaker.

English Literacy Workbooks for Spanish-Speaking Teens and Adults | ESL Workbooks

Everything is ready to go.  Directions are in Spanish so parents can help their children.  There is an answer key for each lesson.

Each workbook has eight lessons.  In Books 1 and 2, the lessons are about every day activities.  In Books 3 and 4, four lessons are about every day activities and the other four are about United States history or government.  The print in the workbooks is large.  The reading level in Book 1 is at the first and second grade level.  The books get progressively more difficult.  The reading level for Book 4 is at the fourth grade reading level.  Each lesson begins with a vocabulary list, then a conversation, story, activity pages, and finally an answer key. The lessons are bilingual with the word lists, conversations, and stories presented in Spanish and English.  The directions for the activity pages are in Spanish but the activities are in English.  There are two dictionaries at the back of each workbook: a Spanish dictionary and an English dictionary. There is a CD available for each workbook so the student can listen to the vocabulary lists, conversations and stories in English and Spanish. The Orton-Gillingham approach uses structured, explicit, systematic and multisensory procedures in teaching the forty-four English speech sounds.

Each state is presented by a story, then a vocabulary and comprehension page, next a map with questions, and finally a chart, table, graph, or another type of activity which presents information to the reader.  Most stories deal with a historic topic. Fisher Hill has an excellent series for non-Spanish speakers to learn Spanish or for Spanish speakers who need to improve on their Spanish reading and writing skills.  The series is called Spanish Made Fun and Easy and consists of two workbooks. https://fisher-hill.com/product-category/spanish-category/ (Click on each book to find out more information about the workbook.) There are twelve lessons in each book.  Each lesson deals with a common theme, i.e., Breakfast, Telling Time, Shopping, Sports, etc.  At the end of the book are two dictionaries:  Spanish-English and English-Spanish.

Each lesson is divided into eight parts.  First, there is a vocabulary list.  Beginning Spanish is included as well as the vocabulary of the particular theme.  The definite article is placed in front of each Spanish noun on the list, letting the student know whether it is a feminine or masculine noun.  Then there is a conversation in order to use the vocabulary in a common situation.  Next is a story related to the theme which reinforces the vocabulary and the conversation.  The fourth page of each lesson is an exercise that requires choosing a word from the vocabulary list and then writing it in a sentence that is missing that word.  The next three pages are a variety of activity pages.  At the end of each lesson are the answers to the exercises.

It is recommended do one lesson per week. The speed at which a student learns Spanish depends on the student.  It would be useful to read the conversation and story out loud to gain smoothness.

As a teacher, I loved teaching and I also loved summertime.  During the summer, I was fortunate to be able to travel all over the world.  My trips were usually hiking trips.  While hiking I would think about what I was going to do once school started.  What fun activities would I do for the first week back?  How would I structure my reading and writing programs?  Reading and writing were my favorite subjects to teach. My methods were based on Orton Gillingham principles.

My company, Fisher Hill has a Structured Literacy program to teach Spanish speakers how to read and spell based on Orton Gillingham principles. The program uses systematic and explicit methods to teach decoding and word identification skills. Structured literacy is beneficial to all students but especially to students who have had or may have difficulty learning to read and spell.

The program is geared toward Spanish speakers, but students of all languages can very much benefit from this program.  The literacy program has six levels:  Each level consists of four workbooks to help students learn to read and write in English.  The four workbooks for each level are:

Fisher Hill’s Structured Literacy Program has Placement Tests to determine on which level a student should begin the program.  The Placement Tests can be found under Teacher Resources on our webpage at www.Fisher-Hill.com. Click on Teacher Resources from the top tool bar. Then click on Reading and Spelling. Next scroll down to the Placement Tests. Students need to score 80% on a placement test to go to the next level.

The Placement Tests assess the sounds taught at each level of the program. Placement Test Level 1 evaluates the sounds taught in Level 1. If a student cannot perform at 80% on the Placement Test for Level 1 then he/she needs to begin with Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. This is the first book to be used for Level 1. After completing Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, the student can then use English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 and English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. The level finishes with English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. After completing all four workbooks, the student then again takes Placement Test Level 1. If he/she performs at 80% then he/she can go on to Level 2. If a student does not perform at 80%, then the student needs more practice with the sounds he/she has not yet mastered.

Each Placement Test consists of 30 words a student must spell. This will determine if the student has learned the sounds presented at each level. he teacher or volunteer dictates the words and the students write them. Students who perform 80% on the test, can go on to the next level. Below the tests, is a student’s test form that can be used for all levels.

Do you know a Spanish speaker who needs to obtain his/her citizenship?  Fisher Hill has two workbooks that are bilingual to help get the job done.  https://fisher-hill.com/product-category/u-s-citizenship-for-the-spanish-speaker-series/ These workbooks are easy to use.  Adults like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, and the directions are in Spanish.  There’s an answer key and an English translation of the Spanish directions at the end of each book.

The two workbooks help Spanish speakers pass the English writing, reading and civics portions of the U.S. Citizenship Exam.  To pass these three sections, a person must be able to write correctly one sentence dictated by the interviewer; read out loud correctly one sentence given by the interviewer; and answer six out of ten of the civics questions given by the interviewer.

U.S. Citizenship for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 gives Spanish speakers information to help pass the American Government questions on the Civics test. Book 1 also provides practice to help pass the reading and writing tests. U.S. Citizenship for the Spanish Speaker Book 2gives Spanish speakers information and practice to help pass the American History and Integrated Civics questions on the Civics test. Book 2 also provides practice to help pass the reading and writing tests.  The Civics Test includes 100 questions about government, history and integrated civics.  Applicants will be asked 10 questions.  The Civics test is an oral test.    One or more of the 10 civics questions may be about the current people holding different government offices.  Applicants will need to know the names of people holding the current government offices.

Fisher Hill has a series with six workbooks called English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker. https://fisher-hill.com/product-category/reading-and-spelling/  The series was written to help Spanish speakers learn to read and write in English.  The workbooks use a systematic approach in teaching the English speech sounds and provides practice with phonemic awareness, which is the ability to identify individual sounds and their order within words.  Learning the different speech sounds will help students read and write in English fluently.  Eighty-five percent (85%) of words in English are phonetic.  The workbooks also present many of the commonly used words, called sight words, that are not phonetic.

The workbooks are bilingual since the word list for each lesson is presented in English and Spanish.  There are pictures to go with many of the words in the lists.  Each lesson emphasizes one or two new speech sounds.  The vowel sounds in English are different than those in Spanish, but many of the English consonant sounds are similar to those in Spanish. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet:

Each lesson’s word list begins with words that contain the speech sound that is being emphasized in that lesson.  The last word or words in the list are sight words.

Practicing English speech sounds and their spellings along with sight words will help Spanish speakers and all students learn English reading and spelling.

Adults like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, directions are in Spanish, there’s lots of pictures but the content is for adults.  Teachers like our books because everything is ready to go!  There’s an answer key at the the end of each lesson and an English translation of the Spanish directions at the end of each book.
