Fisher Hill’s Structured Literacy Program Part Two

Fisher Hill’s Structured Literacy Program Part Two 150 150 hill-fisher

As a teacher, I used structured literacy to teach my students to read and write.  Structured literacy teaching is the most effective approach for students who experience difficulty learning to read and spell. Structured literacy uses a very systematic and explicit approach to teach phoneme awareness, the alphabetic principle (sound-symbol letter awareness), orthography (spelling), morphology (meaning of words), syntax and semantics.  These are all necessary for reading comprehension and writing composition.

I used explicit instruction to explain each new concept directly and clearly and provided guided practice.  We had quick practice drills to build fluency, used our fingers to spell words by representing each phoneme in a word.  Students applied new skills to reading and writing words which helped their reading comprehension and writing composition.

My instruction followed a planned scope and sequence of skills that progressed from easier to more difficult. One concept built on another. The goal of systematic teaching is automatic and fluent application of language knowledge to reading for meaning.

Multisensory methods were used.  Students heard the words, spelt the words and saw the words. Student used white boards to spell and read words.  We also used letter tiles to spell and read words.  We assembled sentence with words on cards and color-coding sentences in paragraphs.

I monitored progress through observation and brief quizzes that measured retention and what had been taught.

Fisher Hill’s Structured Literacy Program has six levels:  Each level consists of four workbooks to help Spanish-speaking teens and adults learn to read and write in English.  The four workbooks for each level are:

Reading and Spelling

Reading Comprehension

Writing Composition

Vocabulary

The first book to use at each level is the Reading and Spelling workbook.  The program uses a very systematic, explicit approach in teaching the 43 speech sounds used in the English language.  After completing the Reading and Spelling workbook, students are ready to practice reading by using the Reading Comprehesnion workbook.  They can also practice writing by using the Writing Composition workbook.  The Vocabulary workbook reviews the vocabulary at each level. In the Reading and Spelling workbooks, there is a short diagnostic test in each lesson to monitor progress. Fisher Hill’s Structured Literacy Program

Fisher Hill’s Structured Literacy Program 150 150 hill-fisher

Structured literacy teaches oral and written language skills in an explicit, systematic manner.  Structured literacy includes:

Phoneme awareness.  Students learn to be aware of the individual speech sounds (phonemes) that make up words This is a critical foundation for learning to read and spell. A phoneme is the smallest unit of speech that can change the meaning of a word. For example, the different vowel phonemes in big, bag, bug, beg, bog create different words. Although linguists do not agree on the list of phonemes in English, it has approximately 43 phonemes: 25 consonants and 18 vowels.

Sound-Symbol. Students learn that phonemes are represented with graphemes.  Graphemes are letters (a, s, t, etc.) and letter combinations (th, ng, oa, ew, igh, etc.) that represent phonemes in print. This system is often referred to as the phonics code, the alphabetic code, or the written symbol system.

Orthography. Students learn through explicit instruction and practice to understand and remember patterns and conventions of letter use in the writing system. For example, some spellings for consonant sounds, such as –ck, –tch, and –dge, are used only after short vowels. Some letters, like v and j, cannot be used at the ends of words. Only some letters are doubled. These conventions can all be taught as part of the print system or orthography.

Students learn the six basic types of syllables. It is a convention that almost every written syllable in English has a vowel grapheme. Structured Literacy programs teach six basic types of written syllables: closed (com, mand), open (me, no), vowel-consonant-e (take, plete), vowel team (vow, mean), vowel-r combinations (car, port), and the final consonant-le pattern (lit-tle, hum-ble). Recognizing written syllable patterns helps students divide longer words into readable chunks and helps in understanding spelling conventions such as doubling of consonant letters (little vs. title).

Morphology. Students learn that a morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning in language. Morphemes include prefixes, roots, base words, and suffixes. Recognizing morphemes helps students figure out and remember the meanings of new words.

Syntax. Students learn about syntax. Syntax is the system for ordering words in sentences so that meaning can be communicated. The study of syntax includes understanding parts of speech and conventions of grammar and word use in sentences. Lessons teach the formulation of simple, compound, and complex sentences, and work with both phrases and clauses in sentence construction.

Semantics. Semantics is the aspect of language concerned with meaning. Meaning is conveyed both by single words and by phrases and sentences.

Easy to Use Workbooks to Learn Spanish

Easy to Use Workbooks to Learn Spanish 150 150 hill-fisher

Is your new year’s resolution to learn Spanish?  Fisher Hill has two easy to use workbooks to do just that!

There are twelve lessons in each workbook.  Each lesson deals with a common theme, i.e., Breakfast, Telling Time, etc.  At the end of the books are two dictionaries:  Spanish-English and English-Spanish.

Each lesson is divided into eight parts.  First, there is a vocabulary list.  Beginning Spanish is included as well as the vocabulary of the particular theme.  The definite article is placed in front of each Spanish noun on the list, letting the student know whether it is a feminine or masculine noun.  Then there is a conversation in order to use the vocabulary in a common situation.  Next is a story related to the theme which reinforces the vocabulary and the conversation.  The fourth page of each lesson is an exercise that requires choosing a word from the vocabulary list and then writing it in a sentence that is missing that word.  The next three pages are a variety of activity pages.  At the end of each lesson are the answers to the exercises.

It is recommended to do one lesson per week but each person is different so go through the workbook at your pace. It would be useful to read the conversations and stories out loud several times to gain smoothness.

Listen to television in Spanish. Also, if you can speak with Spanish speakers that would be very beneficial.  Children learn quickly to speak another language because most children are not bothered by the mistakes they make in speaking.  It is important to take advantage of every opportunity to speak.  Don’t be worried about making mistakes!

Students like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, directions are in Spanish and the workbooks are easy and fun to use. Teachers like our books because everything is ready to go!
