Fisher Hill’s literacy workbooks use a structured literacy approach.  The books are based on Orton-Gillingham practices.  Most of Fisher Hill’s workbooks are for Spanish-speaking teens and adults to learn to read and write in English.

Kathy Fisher is the owner of Fisher Hill and the author of the workbooks. She taught reading for 17 years.  She is a member of the International Dyslexia Association and has two boys who had difficulty learning to read.  One son graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry and the other son dropped out of high school, passed the high school proficiency test, and worked at Twitter before he was twenty years old making more money than his mother who had a master’s degree in Education.  Needless to say, the boys school experiences at times were not a joyful affair especially with the younger one who finally dropped out of school when he was sixteen.

School can be extremely difficult for children who have a hard time learning to read.  As a teacher, I loved teaching reading because I knew what to do.  I joined IDA when my boys had difficulty learning to read. This reading difficulty came as a shock to me because I had read to them since they were babies. They had gone to Mommy and Me classes, story time at the library, and they had plenty of books at home.  IDA taught me how to teach reading.  They taught me about Orton-Gillingham.  I knew what to do.  I did not depend on the school’s textbooks to teach reading.

The workbooks I’ve written use a very structured, systematic, explicit approach to teach the English speech sounds to read and spell.  The series called English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker uses phonics, phonemic awareness and other phonological skills to teach the speech sounds.  This series has six workbooks.  After completing English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker  Book 1, students are ready to practice their beginning reading skills by using English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. (There are six workbooks in this series). After completing English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, they can also begin practicing writing by using English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. (There are six workbooks in this series). After completing English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, students can use English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 to review the vocabulary presented in English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1.  (There are six workbook in the English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker series.) After completing the four workbooks at each level, students will have an excellent foundation in English literacy.  There are six level in the literacy program.

Are you looking for a certain workbook on Fisher Hill’s website but can’t find it?  This blog will help you find the book you’re looking for. The easiest way to find a book is to go to the Fisher Hill Store.  You can find this on the top tool bar.  Click on Fisher-Hill Store and a menu will pop up.  From that menu:

Click on Speaking and Listening if you want the workbooks for the English for the Spanish Speakers series.

Click on Reading and Spelling if you want the workbooks for the English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker series.

Click on Reading Comprehension if you want the workbooks for the English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker series.

Click on Writing Composition if you want the workbooks for the English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker series.

Click on Vocabulary if you want the workbooks for the English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker series.

On the top tool bar, you will also find Teacher Resources.  Click on Teacher Resources and a menu will pop up. From that menu:

As with all Fisher Hill workbooks, the activities and lessons are not overwhelming. The workbooks are explicit, systematic and very structured.  Adults like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, directions are in Spanish, most workbooks have many pictures yet the content is for adults. Teachers like our books because everything is ready to go! There’s an answer key at the end of each lesson and English translations of the Spanish directions at the end of each book.

On the Home Page, you can always just click on any workbook, to order the book or to view Sample Pages from that book.

Fisher Hill has many workbooks to help Spanish-speaking teens and adults learn English.  Fisher Hill now has a Spanish side to their website.

Visit our website at www.Fisher-Hill.com.  To view our website in Spanish, click on the word Español on the top toolbar in the right corner. On the Spanish side of the webpage, only ebooks can be downloaded.  If you want a hard copy of the books, you can order those from the English side of the website.

To navigate through our website,

  1. first put in the address www.Fisher-Hill.com.  This will bring you to the English side.
  2. From the top toolbar, you can click on Fisher Hill Store.
  3. Then scroll down to click on the different workbook topics. You can then click on a workbook. This will bring you to a page that will give you information about the workbook.
  4. On this page, you can click on Sample Pages to view pages from the workbook. There is also an option where you can choose to purchase a hardcopy of the book or ebook.

On the English side of www.Fisher-Hill.com, on the top toolbar, you can click on Teacher Resources.  This will bring you to a page where you can view sample pages or lessons from each workbook.  Under Reading and Spelling, there are activities, for example: Word and Sentence Practice with the Short /a/ Sound. Also under Reading and Spelling, are six Placement Tests and instructions on how to use the Placement Tests that go with our English Literacy Program for Spanish-Speaking teens and Adults: Instructions for Sound Spelling Placement Tests, and  Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1.

From the Home Page, you can click on any book to take you to it’s page and then if you click again on the book, it will take you to more information about the book.

In May 2019, Fisher Hill’s website will be bilingual! People will be able to download our workbooks from our different series for Spanish-speaking teens and adults. 

People will be able to download our popular series called English for the Spanish Speaker. This series has four workbooks.  Each book in the series has eight lessons.  In Books 1 and 2, the lessons are about every day activities. In Books 3 and 4, four lessons are about every day activities and the other four are about United States history or government.  The print in the workbooks is large.  The reading level in Book 1 is at the first and second-grade level.  The books get progressively more difficult.  The reading level for Book 4 is at the fourth-grade reading level.  Each lesson begins with a vocabulary list, then a conversation, story, activity pages, and finally an answer key. The lessons are bilingual with the word lists, conversations, and stories presented in Spanish and English.  The directions for the activity pages are in Spanish but the activities are in English.  There are two dictionaries at the back of each workbook: a Spanish dictionary and an English dictionary. There is a downloadable audio for each workbook so the student can listen to the vocabulary lists, conversations, and stories in English.

The purpose of these workbooks is to help Spanish speakers improve their English vocabulary. English Vocabulary for Spanish Speakers Book 1 reinforces the vocabulary presented in English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, and English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 .A few new words are presented in English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1,so an English-Spanish dictionary would be helpful. Each of the six English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker workbooks reviews the vocabulary presented at each level. There are six levels in Fisher Hill’s English Literacy Program for Spanish-speaking teens and adults.  Each level has four workbooks:

Every workbook in the program is bilingual.  The directions are in Spanish.  THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE SPANISH DIRECTIONS IS LOCATED AT THE BACK OF EACH WORKBOOK. There is also an Answer Key at the back of each book.
