English Reading and Spelling for Spanish Speakers 150 150 hill-fisher

Fisher Hill has an excellent English literacy program for Spanish-speaking teens and adults.  The program has six levels.  Each level has four workbooks:

a Reading and Spelling workbook

a Reading Comprehension workbook

a Writing Composition workbook

and a Vocabulary workbook

Fisher Hill Store - ProductsEach level begins with the English Reading and Spelling workbook. The English Reading and Spelling workbooks were written to help Spanish speakers learn to read and spell in English.  They use a systematic approach teaching the English speech sounds and provide practice with phonemic awareness, which is the ability to identify individual sounds and their order within words.  Learning the different speech sounds will help students read and spell in English fluently.  Eighty-five percent (85%) of words in English are phonetic.  This book also presents many of the commonly used words, called sight words, that are not phonetic.

The workbooks are bilingual because the word list for each lesson is presented in English and Spanish.  There are pictures to go with many of the words on the lists.  Each lesson emphasizes one or two new speech sounds. The vowel sounds in English are different than those in Spanish, but many of the English consonant sounds are similar to those in Spanish. Most consonants in English have one sound. Vowels in English make several speech sounds.  Sometimes the letter “y” is used as a vowel.

Each lesson starts with the Word list and then three or four pages to practice words with the new speech sounds. At the end of each lesson is an answer key.

In English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Books 4, 5, and 6, prefixes and suffixes are introduced and practiced.

On our website, if you click on any workbook, you can view sample pages from that book.

On our website, there are placement tests to determine on which level a student should begin the literacy program.  A student needs a score of 80% to go to the next level.  For example, if a student gets 60% on the placement test for level one, then that student needs to begin with level one with English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. Each level begins with the Reading and Spelling workbook.

These placement tests can be found under Teacher Resourceson our website www.Fisher-Hill.comTeacher Resourcescan be found on the top tool bar. Click on Teacher Resources, then click on Reading and Spelling.  Then scroll down to the placement tests. The placement tests are called Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1 and so forth.  Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1 is for level one. You will also find instructions on how to give the tests.

There are other teacher resources for these workbooks under Reading and Spelling.  There is a Scope and Sequence to help you use the workbooks.  There are Word and Sentence Practice pages and Word Chains to help with fluency.

English Vocabulary for ELL Students

English Vocabulary for ELL Students 150 150 fisherhilladmin

Having a well developed vocabulary is the key to reading comprehension.  The more words a person knows, the better he/she will understand the text.  For English language learners (ELLs), vocabulary development is especially important. The average native English speaker enters kindergarten with a vocabulary of 5,000 words.  The average ELL kindergartner may know 5,000 words in his or her native language, but very few words in English.  Closing the gap can be a challenge for ELLs.

Most ELL students quickly learn to communicate verbally with peers, but ELL students must also learn academic English.  There are many Spanish English cognates that can help students learn academic English. Cognates are words in different languages that derived from the same original word or root.  About 40% of all English words have similar cognates in Spanish. Family and familia, coast and costa, lion and léon are cognates.

Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to make a word part of your vocabulary.  Using the new words as often as possible in everyday conversations or writing will increase a person’s vocabulary

Most vocabulary words are learned from context.  The more words you’re exposed to, the better vocabulary you will have.  When reading, it is often possible to figure out the meaning of a new word from the context of the sentence or paragraph.

With the use of iPads and eReaders, it is easy to look up unknown words.  You only need to tap on the word to pull up its definition.

In our series English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker, students get the necessary practice to increase their English vocabulary.  Many Spanish English cognates are presented in the six workbook series.

English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker is part of Fisher Hill’s English literacy program for Spanish-speaking teens and adults. It reinforces the vocabulary presented in the other three series of the program: English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish SpeakerEnglish Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker and English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker. Vocabulary knowledge increases reading comprehension, writing proficiency and speaking skills.

Fisher Hill’s English literacy program for Spanish-speaking teens and adults includes the above four workbook series. These series can be used in conjunction with each other.  How does the program work? English Reading and Spelling Book 1introduces students to reading in English. The English Reading and Spelling series uses a very systematic and explicit approach to teaching the forty-four speech sounds used in the English language. Learning these sounds will help students read and spell. When English Reading and Spelling Book 1is completed, students, are ready to practice their beginning reading skills with English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker Book 1and their beginning writing skills with English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. The vocabulary presented in the first books of each series is reviewed in English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. The four series each with six workbooks, were written to be used together to give students a good foundation in English literally.  Adults like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, directions are in Spanish, there are lots of pictures but the content is for older students. Teachers like our books because everything is ready to go! There is an answer key at the end of each lesson and an English translation of the Spanish directions at the end of each book. The six levels of the program with four workbooks at each level provides an excellent foundation in literacy for Spanish-speaking students. Each level of the program contains:

an English reading and spelling workbook

an English reading comprehension workbook

an English writing composition workbook and

an English vocabulary workbook.

English Writing Composition Workbook Series for Spanish Speakers

English Writing Composition Workbook Series for Spanish Speakers 150 150 fisherhilladmin

Fisher Hill has a six-workbook series call English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker.  This series was written to help Spanish speakers improve their English writing skills. The series uses a structured and systematic approach in teaching the different writing skills. English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1begins by teaching basic sentence structure, progresses to longer, more detailed sentences, and ends with students writing informative paragraphs. The final book in the series includes instruction and practice for writing compound and complex sentences. It also provides instruction and practice for writing essays. By the time students finish the six-book writing series, they will be able to compose informative, operational, and persuasive essays.  These six workbooks are full of writing activities and graphic organizers to help students improve their writing skills.

The workbooks are bilingual. The directions are in Spanish. The English translations for the Spanish directions are located at the back of each book. There is also an answer key at the back.

As with all skills, writing takes practice, practice, and more practice to become proficient. The English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker series provides the practice and information Spanish speakers need to improve their English writing composition skills.

English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speakeris an excellent series to use in conjunction with English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speakerand English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speakerseries because the books in all three series use the same vocabulary. English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speakeris another six-book series that reinforces the vocabulary presented in the other three series.  By using the four series together, students get an excellent foundation in English literacy.

English Reading and Spelling Workbooks for Spanish Speakers

English Reading and Spelling Workbooks for Spanish Speakers 150 150 fisherhilladmin

Fisher Hill has a six workbook series called English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker. This reading and spelling ESL workbook series is for Spanish-speaking teens and adults. The six workbooks were written to help Spanish speakers learn to read and spell in English.  The workbooks use Orton Gillingham methods to teach reading and spelling.  Orton Gillingham uses a very systematic, structured, explicit, and multisensory approach to teach the forty-four English speech sounds to read and spell. The workbooks provide practice with phonemic awareness, which is the ability to identify individual sounds and their order within words.  Learning the different speech sounds will help students read and spell in English fluently.  Eighty-five percent (85%) of words in English are phonetic.  The workbooks also present many of the commonly used words, called sight words, that are not phonetic.

The workbooks are bilingual since the word list for each lesson is presented in English and Spanish.  There are pictures to go with many of the words in the lists. Each lesson emphasizes one or two new speech sounds.  The vowel sounds in English are different than those in Spanish, but many of the English consonant sounds are similar to those in Spanish. Most consonants in English have one sound. Vowels can make several speech sounds.  Sometimes the letter “y” is used as a vowel.

Words are made up of syllables (units of pronunciation).  Some words have one syllable, others have two or more syllables.  Every syllable must have a vowel sound.  If a word has three syllables then it has three vowel sounds.

Each lesson’s word list begins with words that contain the speech sound that is being emphasized in that lesson.  The last two words in the list are sight words.

Practicing English speech sounds, sight words, and their spellings will help Spanish speakers learn English reading and spelling.

In English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Books 4, 5, and 6, prefixes and suffixes are introduced and practiced.

On our website, there are placement tests to determine which level a student should begin.  A student needs a score of 80% on the placement test to go to the next level. For example, if a student gets 60% on the placement test for level one, then that student needs to begin with level one with English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. Each level begins with the Reading and Spelling workbook.

These placement tests can be found under Teacher Resources on our website www.Fisher-Hill.com.  Teacher Resources can be found on the top tool bar.  Click on Teacher Resources, then click on Reading and Spelling.  Then scroll down to the placement tests.
