This past spring Fisher Hill exhibited its books at several conferences. At one conference, a teacher asked about the story titles in the series English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker. In Books 1-3, the stories are short. In Books 4-6 the stories are a page long. In Book 4, the stories are written on a fourth grade reading level, in Book 5, a fifth grade reading level and in Book 6, a sixth grade reading level.

The purpose of the series English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker is to help students improve their English reading comprehension skills. Reading comprehension is the ability to draw meaning from written words. Each workbook is made up of twenty lessons. Lessons include practice with fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and phonology or phonics. There is an answer key at the end of each lesson. Reading smoothly (fluency) is an important skill. Fluency allows readers to think about what they are reading instead of having to think about sounding out words. Decoding skills need to be learned and practiced so these skills become automatic when reading words. Visualizing (making pictures in your head) helps readers remember what they have read. Good vocabulary skills help readers visualize. Readers can not visualize a word if they do not know its meaning. All of these skills: fluency, visualizing, vocabulary, and decoding are necessary to have good reading comprehension.
Reading comprehension is the goal of reading. Reading is an essential skill for jobs and daily life. Many people enjoy reading and say it is one of their favorite past times. Others read only when it is necessary. Whichever the case may be, everyone needs to know how to read. Learning to read comes easier to some people. Most people need to be taught how to read. It is different than learning to talk. For some people, learning to read can be a very difficult thing to do but with practice, most people can learn to read.
English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker series is part of Fisher Hill’s English Literacy Program for Spanish speakers. There are six levels in the program. To progress through the program, students need to do all the level one books first: English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 then English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 and finally English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. After finishing the four workbooks in Level 1, then students can begin Level 2. Each level always begins with the Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker workbook.
