English Speech Sounds Part 4
In my last two blogs English Speech Sounds Part 2 and English Speech Sounds Part 3 , I’ve talked about long and short vowel sounds. In this week’s blog English Speech Sounds Part 4 I will talk about the the “other vowel sounds.”
The vowel spellings oi and oy both make the same vowel sound: oi as in coin and oy as in boy. The oi spellling is found at the beginning or in the middle of a word and the oy spelling is usually found at the end of a word.
The r-controlled vowel sounds: ar, or, er, ir and ur are found in many words.
ar says /ar/ as in car.
or says /or/ as in corn.
er, ir and ur say /er/ as in her, bird, and curl.
The vowel spelling oo says /oo/ as in book. This spelling oo also makes the long u vowel sound as in moon.
The vowel spelling ow and ou make the /ou/ sound as in loud and growl. The vowel spelling ou is the first choice for spelling the /ou/ sound in the middle of a word as in found and mouth. The vowel spelling ow is usually at the end of the word as in cow or followed by n or l as in clown and growl. The ow vowel sound can also make the long o vowel sound as in show.
The vowel spellings aw, augh, and ough say /aw/ as in saw, caught and bought.
All the vowel sounds are presented and practiced in our series English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker. Book 1 of English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker is the first book to use and complete in our English Literacy Program. It is important to complete English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 before using English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 and English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. After completing English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, then you can use the other Book 1s from the literacy program to practice the skills, sounds and words learned in English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. I hope you enjoyed this weeks blog English Speech Sounds Part 4.
In next week’s blog, I will present the Scope and Sequence for the English Reading and Spelliing Series.
