The Reading and Spelling workbooks provide practice with phonemic awareness, which is the ability to identify individual sounds and their order within words.  Learning the different speech sounds will help students read and spell in English.  Eighty-five percent (85%) of words in English are phonetic.  The workbooks also present many of the commonly used words, called sight words, that are not phonetic.

Both of my boys had difficulty learning to read so I know how frustrating school work can be.  When they were young I joined the International Dyslexia Association so I could learn how to deal with this struggle. Both boys are now grown with wonderful jobs. One graduated with a Ph.D in inorganic chemistry and the other is a computer whiz.

Fisher Hill has many easy to use workbooks that are perfect for Zoom classes and lessons.  In this blog, I will talk about the English Reading and Spelling workbooks that are geared toward Spanish speakers but anyone wanting to improve their English reading and spelling will benefit from these easy to use workbooks.

English Reading and Spelling Book 1 https://fisher-hill.com/product/english-reading-and-spelling-for-the-spanish-speaker-book-1/  covers the five short vowel sounds, two long vowel sounds and beginning blends. There are twenty lessons in Book 1. Each lesson has five to six pages.

Each lesson begins with a word list that includes words with the targeted sound for that lesson. Many of these words can also be used as vocabulary words.

The next page in the lesson works with developing comprehension skills.

The third page in the lesson is a fill in the blank page so students can practice using the words from the word list from the first page of the lesson. There are pictures from the first page of the lesson at the end of some of the fill in the blank sentences since many sentences could have more than one answer. Students use the pictures at the end of the sentence to know which word from the word list to use.

The fourth page of the lesson practices spelling, grammar, vocabulary or writing.

 The fifth page of the lesson is a Word Search with the targeted and high frequency words from the lesson.

The last page of the lesson is an Answer Key.

In the workbook, there are four Mastery Checks to evaluate student progress.

Each workbook in the series follows the same format at Book 1. Each workbook has twenty lessons and each lesson has six pages.

Fisher Hill has a series with six workbooks called English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker. https://fisher-hill.com/product-category/reading-and-spelling/  The series was written to help Spanish speakers learn to read and write in English.  The workbooks use a systematic approach in teaching the English speech sounds and provides practice with phonemic awareness, which is the ability to identify individual sounds and their order within words.  Learning the different speech sounds will help students read and write in English fluently.  Eighty-five percent (85%) of words in English are phonetic.  The workbooks also present many of the commonly used words, called sight words, that are not phonetic.

The workbooks are bilingual since the word list for each lesson is presented in English and Spanish.  There are pictures to go with many of the words in the lists.  Each lesson emphasizes one or two new speech sounds.  The vowel sounds in English are different than those in Spanish, but many of the English consonant sounds are similar to those in Spanish. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet:

Lower Case

Each lesson’s word list begins with words that contain the speech sound that is being emphasized in that lesson.  The last word or words in the list are sight words.

Practicing English speech sounds and their spellings along with sight words will help Spanish speakers and all students learn English reading and spelling.

La serie English for the Spanish Speaker (Inglés para hispanohablantes) ha ayudado a aprender inglés a miles de adolescentes y adultos de habla hispana. Hay cuatro cuadernos de ejercicios y cada uno de ellos contiene historias, actividades, conversaciones, listas de vocabularios, juegos, diccionarios y claves de respuestas.

Estes libros fueron escrito para enseñarle inglés a una persona siempre y cuando la persona pueda leer, escribir, y hablar español.  El libro trata del inglés para principiantes con el fin de ayudar a las personas a vivir y trabajar en los Estados Unidos.

En los libros hay ocho lecciones y Pasatiempos.  Cada lección trata de un tema común, por ejemplo. Las lecciones están presentadas en inglés y traducidas al español.  Todas las instrucciones están en español.  Los Pasatiempos incluyen crucigramas, acertijos, y busca palabras.  Al final del libro hay dos diccionarios:  Inglés – Español y Español-Inglés; y un índice.

Fisher Hill ofrece un excelente programa de alfabetización en inglés para adolescentes y adultos de habla hispana. El programa consta de seis niveles. 

Cada nivel tiene cuatro libros de trabajo:

un libro de trabajo de lectura y ortografía

  un libro de trabajo de comprensión de lectura

un libro de trabajo de composición 

un libro de trabajo de vocabulario.

Cada nivel comienza con el libro de trabajo de lectura y ortografía, que enseña a los estudiantes destrezas de decodificación y ortografía.  Los libros de trabajo de comprensión de la lectura y de redacción ayudan a los estudiantes a desarrollar destrezas de comprensión y escritura.  El libro de trabajo de vocabulario revisa el vocabulario para ese nivel.  Cuando los estudiantes terminan los seis niveles, tienen una excelente base de alfabetización en inglés.

El propósito de la serie Lectura y ortografía en inglés para hispanohablanteses ayudar a las personas de habla hispana a leer y a conocer la ortografía en inglés. La serie usa un estilo fonémico sistemático para enseñar a leer y escribir correctamente. El conocimiento de la fonemática es la habilidad de identificar sonidos individuales y su orden dentro de las palabras. Aprender los distintos sonidos del habla ayudará al estudiante a conocer la ortografía y a leer el inglés con fluidez. El ochenta y cinco por ciento (85%) de las palabras en inglés son fonéticas. Este libro también presentará muchas de las palabras pequeñas populares llamadas vocabulario visual que no son fonéticas.

Esta serie es bilingüe porque en cada lección se presenta una lista de palabras en inglés y en español. Hay dibujos que acompañan a muchas de las palabras de las listas. Cada lección subraya uno o dos sonidos nuevos. Los sonidos de las vocales en inglés son diferentes a los de las vocales en español pero muchos de los sonidos de las consonantes en inglés son similares a los de las consonantes en español. Existen 26 letras en el alfabeto en inglés:

Las cinco letras vocales son a, e, i, o, u. Todas las demás letras son consonantes. Las consonantes tienen un sonido excepto la c, la gy la séstas tienen dos sonidos. Las vocales pueden tener varios sonidos en el lenguaje hablado. En ocasiones la letra “y” se usa como vocal. Las palabras se componen de sílabas (unidades de pronunciación). Algunas palabras son de una sílaba, otras tienen dos o más. Cada sílaba debe tener una vocal. Si una palabra tiene tres sílabas, entonces tendrá tres sonidos vocales.

Cada lista de palabras de las lecciones comienza con palabras que contienen el sonido hablado que se está explicando en la lección. La última palabra o palabras de la lista son del vocabulario visual u homófonos.  Al final de los libros se encuentra la traducción de las instrucciones al español.

Practicar los sonidos hablados en inglés, el vocabulario visual y su ortografía le ayudará a la persona de habla hispana a aprender a leer y escribir correctamente el inglés.

Fisher Hill’s popular English for the Spanish Speakerworkbooks are now Ebooks that can be downloaded from our website. Click on Choose an option.  You will have several choices.  Two of the choices can be downloaded: audio download or ebook. If you choose one of these then you will be able to download the audio or the ebook after purchase.  You can do this with each of the workbooks in this series.  

There are four workbooks in English for the Spanish Speaker series. Each workbook has eight lessons.  In Books 1 and 2, the lessons are about every day activities.  In Books 3 and 4, four lessons are about every day activities and the other four are about United States history or government. The print in the workbooks is large. The reading level in Book 1 is at the first and second grade level.  The books get progressively more difficult.  The reading level for Book 4 is at the fourth grade reading level. Each lesson begins with a vocabulary list, then a conversation, story, activity pages, and finally an answer key. The lessons are bilingual with the word lists, conversations, and stories presented in Spanish and English.  The directions for the activity pages are in Spanish but the activities are in English. There are two dictionaries at the back of each workbook: a Spanish dictionary and an English dictionary. There is a CD available for each workbook so the student can listen to the vocabulary lists, conversations and stories in English. 

Adults like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, and the directions are in Spanish. Teachers like our books because everything is ready to go!  There’s an answer key included in each workbook.
