Fisher Hill has a six book workbook series call English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker https://www.fisher-hill.com/product-category/composition/. This series was written to help Spanish speakers improve their English writing skills.  The series uses a structured and systematic approach in teaching the different writing skills. English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 begins by teaching basic sentence structure, progresses to longer, more detailed sentences, and ends with students writing informative paragraphs.  The final book in the series (Book 6) includes instruction and practice for writing compound and complex sentences. It also provides instruction and practice for writing essays. By the time students finish the six-book writing series, they will be able to compose informative, operational, and persuasive essays.  These six workbooks are full of writing activities and graphic organizers to help students improve their writing skills.

English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker is part of Fisher Hill’s Structured Literacy Program for Spanish speaking teens and adults to learn how to read and write in English https://www.fisher-hill.com/structured-literacy-program/ The series is geared toward Spanish speakers, but students of all languages can benefit from this program.  The series has six levels.   Each level has four workbooks:

Reading and Spelling

Reading Comprehension

Writing Composition

Vocabulary

The first book to use at each level is the Reading and Spelling workbook  https://www.fisher-hill.com/product-category/reading-and-spelling/. The program uses a very systematic, explicit approach to teaching the forty-four English speech sounds.  After completing the Reading and Spelling workbook, students are ready to practice reading by using the Reading Comprehension https://www.fisher-hill.com/product-category/comprehension/ workbook or writing by using the Writing Composition https://www.fisher-hill.com/product-category/composition/ workbook.  The Vocabulary https://www.fisher-hill.com/product-category/vocabulary/ workbook reviews the vocabulary at each level. After completing the six levels, students will have an excellent foundation in English literacy. On our website at www.Fisher-Hill.com under Teacher Resources there are placement tests to determine on which level a student should begin. After clicking on Teacher Resources, then click on Reading and Spelling and scroll down until you reach the placement tests.  There are also instructions on how to use the placement tests.

Structured Literacy – English Writing Composition for Spanish Speakers

Structured Literacy – English Writing Composition for Spanish Speakers 150 150 hill-fisher

Fisher Hill’s literacy workbooks use a structured literacy approach.  All the books are based on Orton-Gillingham practices.  Most of Fisher Hill’s workbooks are for Spanish-speaking teens and adults to learn to read and write in English.

Kathy Fisher is the owner of Fisher Hill and the author of the workbooks. She taught reading for 17 years.  She is a member of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and has two boys who had difficulty learning to read.  One son graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry and the other son dropped out of high school, passed the high school proficiency test, and worked at Twitter before he was twenty years old making more money than his mother who had a master’s degree in Education.  Needless to say, the boys school experiences at times were not a joyful affair especially with the younger one who finally dropped out of school when he was sixteen.

School can be extremely difficult for children who have a hard time learning to read.  As a teacher, I loved teaching reading because I knew what to do.  I joined IDA when my boys had difficulty learning to read. This reading difficulty came as a shock to me because I had read to them since they were babies. They had gone to Mommy and Me classes, story time at the library, and they had plenty of books at home.  IDA taught me how to teach reading.  They taught me about Orton-Gillingham.  I knew what to do.  I did not depend on the school’s textbooks to teach reading.

The workbooks I’ve written use a very structured, systematic, explicit approach to teach the English speech sounds to read and spell.  The series called English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker helps Spanish speakers improve their English writing skills. There are six workbooks in the series.

English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Books 1 and 2 begin by teaching basic sentence structure, progresses to longer, more detailed sentences, and ends with students writing informative paragraphs.

English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Books 3 and 4 include instruction and practice for writing simple, compound and complex sentences.  It also provides instruction and practice for writing informative and operational essays.

English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Books 5 and 6 include instruction and practice for writing simple, compound and complex sentences.  It also provides instruction and practice for writing informative, operational, persuasive, and contrast/comparison essays.

Students like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, directions are in Spanish, plenty of pictures but the content is for older students. Teachers like our books because everything is ready to go!

The workbooks are appropriate for using with an entire class or with individual students. The directions are in Spanish with English translations at the end of the workbook.
