English Reading and Spelling for Spanish Speakers

Spanish Speakers!  Learn to Read English this Summer! Fisher Hill has  six  English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker workbooks.  The workbooks use Orton Gillingham methods to teach reading and spelling.  Orton Gillingham uses a very systematic, structured, explicit, and multisensory approach to teach the English speech sounds to read and spell. The workbooks provide practice with phonemic awareness, which is the ability to identify individual sounds and their order within words.  Learning the different speech sounds will help students read and spell in English.  Eighty-five percent (85%) of words in English are phonetic.  The workbooks also present many of the commonly used words, called sight words, that are not phonetic.

The workbooks are bilingual because the word list for each lesson is presented in English and Spanish.  There are pictures to go with many of the words in the lists.  Each lesson emphasizes one or two new speech sounds.  In English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Books 4, 5, and 6, prefixes and suffixes are introduced and practiced. Fisher Hill has an excellent workbook series to help Spanish speakers learn to read and spell in English.  The workbook uses Orton-Gillingham principles to teach reading and spelling. The Orton-Gillingham approach uses structured, explicit, systematic and multisensory procedures in teaching the forty-four English speech sounds.

English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 https://fisher-hill.com/product/english-reading-and-spelling-for-the-spanish-speaker-book-1/  covers the five short vowel sounds, two long vowel sounds and beginning blends. There are twenty lessons in Book 1. Each lesson has five to six pages.

Each lesson begins with a word list that includes words with the targeted sound for that lesson. Many of these words can also be used as vocabulary words.

The next page in the lesson works with developing comprehension skills.

The third page in the lesson is a fill in the blank page so students can practice using the words from the word list from the first page of the lesson. There are pictures from the first page of the lesson at the end of some of the fill in the blank sentences since many sentences could have more than one answer. Students use the pictures at the end of the sentence to know which word from the word list to use.

The fourth page of the lesson practices spelling, grammar, vocabulary or writing.

 The fifth page of the lesson is a Word Search with the targeted and high frequency words from the lesson.

The last page of the lesson is an Answer Key.

In the workbook, there are four Mastery Checks to evaluate student progress.

Each workbook in the series follows the same format at Book 1. Each workbook has twenty lessons and each lesson has six pages.

The first book to use at each level is the Reading and Spelling workbook.  The program uses a very systematic, explicit approach to teaching the forty-four English speech sounds.  After completing the English Reading and Spelling Book 1, students are ready to practice reading by using the English Reading Comprehesnion Book 1 or writing by using the English Writing Composition Book 1.  The  English Vocabulary Book 1 reviews the vocabulary presented at Level 1. After completing the six levels, students will have an excellent foundation in English literacy.
