Fisher Hill’s literacy program for Spanish-speaking teens and adults has six levels.  Each level contains:

an English Reading and Spelling workbook

English Reading Comprehension workbook

English Writing Composition workbook

and an English Vocabulary workbook

For each level, students need to always start with the English Reading and Spelling workbook. Then students can use the  Reading Comprehension and Writing Compsoition workbooks at that level to practice their comprehension and writing skills.  With the vocabulary workbooks, students review the vocabuary from each particulary level.

Fisher Hill has teacher resources on their website to go along with their literacy program. There are placements tests to determine on which level a student should begin.  There are Word and Sentence Practice pages to help students develop fluency.  There is a Scope and Sequence for the literacy program and Word Chains that also help with fluency.  There are also sample lessons from each workbook.

Click on Teacher Resources from the top of the web page at www.Fisher-Hill.com. Then click on Reading and Spelling.  Scroll down to see the different resources.  Toward the bottom of the scroll, you will see the Sound Spelling Placement Tests.  These tests determine on which level a student should begin the program.  Each placement test is a spelling test to determine if a student knows the sounds for that level.  A student needs to score 80% or more on a placement test to go to the next level.  The instructor reads the words from the test and the student writes the words. There is a Student Test form to write the words.

Fisher Hill offers English Reading Comprehension for Spanish Speakers, English Reading and Spelling for teens and adults. Get Free ESL sample lessons today.

A los adultos les gustan nuestros cuadernos de ejercicios porque tienen un ritmo razonable, letra grande, instrucciones en español y muchas ilustraciones, pero el contenido es para adultos. A los maestros les gustan nuestros cuadernos porque ¡ya tienen todo listo! Al final de cada lección hay una clave de respuestas, y al final de cada cuaderno se encuentra la traducción al inglés de las instrucciones en español.

Fisher Hill’s Sound Spelling Placement Tests

Fisher Hill’s Sound Spelling Placement Tests 150 150 fisherhilladmin

Fisher Hill’s Sound Spelling Placement Tests

Fisher Hill’s English Literacy Program for Spanish-speaking teens and adults has Sound Spelling Placement Tests to determine on which level a student should begin.  As I stated in my last blog, Fisher Hill’s English Literacy Program is a structured literacy program. This means the program uses systematic and explicit methods to teach decoding and word identification skills. Structured literacy is beneficial to all students but especially to students who have had difficulty learning to read and spell.

Fisher Hill’s Sound Spelling Placement Tests can be found under Teacher Resources on our webpage at www.Fisher-Hill.com.  Click on Teacher Resources from the top tool bar. Then click on Reading and Spelling.  Next scroll down to the Sound Spelling Placement Tests.  Students need to score 80% on a placement test to go to the next level.

The Sound Spelling Placement Tests assess the sounds taught at each level of the program.  Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1evaluates the sounds taught in Level 1.  If a student cannot perform at 80% on the Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1then he/she needs to begin with Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1.  This is the first book to be used for Level 1.  After completing Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, the student can then use English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker Book 1and English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1.  The level finishes with English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1.  After completing all four workbooks, the student then again takes Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1.  If he/she performs at 80% then he/she can go on to Level 2.  If a student does not perform at 80%, then the student needs more practice with the sounds he/she has not mastered yet.

Each Sound Spelling Test consists of 30 words a student must spell.  This will determine if the student has learned the sounds presented at each level. Below is a copy of Sound Spelling Test for Level 1.  The teacher, aid or volunteer dictates the words and the students write them. Students who perform 80% on the test, can go on to the next level. Below the test is the student’s test form that can also be found under Teacher Resources.

It’s important the test giver dictates the words in the correct order starting with number 1 and finishing with number 30.  The first column states what sound is being tested.  If a student does not perform at 80% then the sounds that were not mastered need to be reviewed.

If you have questions about Fisher Hill’s Literacy Program for Spanish-speaking teens and adults you can email your questions to info@fisher-hill.com and we will respond within 24 hours.

Structured Literacy

Fisher Hill’s English Literacy Program is soon going to be available on line.  The twenty-four workbooks in the program will be available to be downloaded from our website at www.Fisher-Hill.com.  Fisher Hill’s English Literacy Program is designed for Spanish speakers who want to learn to read, spell and write in English. Spanish speakers from around the world will be able to use Fisher Hill’s structured literacy program to become literate in English.

Structured literacy uses systematic and explicit methods to teach decoding and word identification. Structured literacy is beneficial to all students but especially to students who have had difficulty learning to read and spell.

Structured literacy teaches phonology, sound-symbol, syllables, morphology, syntax and semantics. Phonology is the study of the sound structure in spoken words. This includes phonemic awarenes which is the ability to distinguish, segment, blend and manipulate sounds in words.

Structured literacy teaches sound-symbol association which is the alphabetic principle: to associate sounds with letters.

Structured literacy teaches syllables. Knowing the six syllable types helps students associate vowel spellings with vowel sounds.  Syllable division rules help students to divide and decode unfamiliar words, especially longer words.

tructured literacy teaches syllables. Knowing the six syllable types helps students associate vowel spellings with vowel sounds.  Syllable division rules help students to divide and decode unfamiliar words, especially longer words.

Structured literacy teaches morphology which is the study of  the meanings of the smallest units of language.  Studying base words and affixes help students decode and understand the meanings of complex words.

Structured literacy teaches syntax which is the principles that dictate the sequence and function of words in sentences. This includes grammar, sentence structure and the mechanics of language (spelling, captalization, punctuation).

Structure literacy ESL workbooks for Spanish-speaking Bilingual teens and adults teaches, semantics which is concerned with meaning.  This includes comprehension of written language.

Structured literacy uses systematic, cumulative, explicit and diagnostic priniciples to teach reading and spelling. This approach is very effective to all students, especially those who have difficulty learning to read and spell.

Students like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, there’s lots of pictures but the content is for older students and adults.  Teachers like our books because everything is ready to go! There’s an answer key at the the end of each lesson and an English translation of the Spanish directions at the end of each book.
