As a teacher, I loved teaching and I also loved summertime.  During the summer, I was fortunate to be able to travel all over the world.  My trips were usually hiking trips.  While hiking I would think about what I was going to do once school started.  What fun activities would I do for the first week back?  How would I structure my reading and writing programs?  Reading and writing were my favorite subjects to teach. My methods were based on Orton Gillingham principles.

My company, Fisher Hill has a Structured Literacy program to teach Spanish speakers how to read and spell based on Orton Gillingham principles. The program uses systematic and explicit methods to teach decoding and word identification skills. Structured literacy is beneficial to all students but especially to students who have had or may have difficulty learning to read and spell.

The program is geared toward Spanish speakers, but students of all languages can very much benefit from this program.  The literacy program has six levels:  Each level consists of four workbooks to help students learn to read and write in English.  The four workbooks for each level are:

Reading and Spelling

Reading Comprehension

Writing Composition

Vocabulary

The first book to use at each level is the Reading and Spelling workbook.  The program uses a very systematic, explicit approach in teaching the English speech sounds.  After completing the Reading and Spelling workbook, students are ready to practice reading by using the Reading Comprehesnion workbook.  They can also practice writing by using the Writing Composition workbook.  The Vocabulary workbook reviews the vocabulary at each level. In the Reading and Spelling workbooks, there is a short diagnostic test in each lesson to monitor progress. After completing the six levels, students will have an excellent foundation in English literacy.

Fisher Hill’s Structured Literacy Program has Placement Tests to determine on which level a student should begin the program.  The Placement Tests can be found under Teacher Resources on our webpage at www.Fisher-Hill.com. Click on Teacher Resources from the top tool bar. Then click on Reading and Spelling. Next scroll down to the Placement Tests. Students need to score 80% on a placement test to go to the next level.

The Placement Tests assess the sounds taught at each level of the program. Placement Test Level 1 evaluates the sounds taught in Level 1. If a student cannot perform at 80% on the Placement Test for Level 1 then he/she needs to begin with Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. This is the first book to be used for Level 1. After completing Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, the student can then use English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 and English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. The level finishes with English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. After completing all four workbooks, the student then again takes Placement Test Level 1. If he/she performs at 80% then he/she can go on to Level 2. If a student does not perform at 80%, then the student needs more practice with the sounds he/she has not yet mastered.

Each Placement Test consists of 30 words a student must spell. This will determine if the student has learned the sounds presented at each level. he teacher or volunteer dictates the words and the students write them. Students who perform 80% on the test, can go on to the next level. Below the tests, is a student’s test form that can be used for all levels.

English Writing for Spanish Speakers

Fisher Hill has a six book workbook series call English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker https://fisher-hill.com/product-category/composition/. This series was written to help Spanish speakers improve their English writing skills.  The series uses a structured and systematic approach in teaching the different writing skills. English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 begins by teaching basic sentence structure, progresses to longer, more detailed sentences, and ends with students writing informative paragraphs.  The final book in the series (Book 6) includes instruction and practice for writing compound and complex sentences. It also provides instruction and practice for writing essays. By the time students finish the six-book writing series, they will be able to compose informative, operational, and persuasive essays.  These six workbooks are full of writing activities and graphic organizers to help students improve their writing skills.

Fisher Hill has many ESL workbooks for Spanish-speaking teens and adult to download.  After you purchase a workbook to be downloaded, there will be a window on your computer that says Order received. On that window, you will see the book(s) you ordered to be downloaded.  Click on the purple rectangle after each book you ordered.  When you click on the purple rectangle that says eBook, the book will download to your computer.  You can then save the book to your computer desktop.

The English for the Spanish Speaker four workbook series can be downloaded.  Each workbook in the series has eight lessons.  In Books 1 and 2, the lessons are about every day activities.  In Books 3 and 4, four lessons are about every day activities and the other four are about United States history or government.  The print in the workbooks is large.  The reading level in Book 1 is at the first and second grade level.  The books get progressively more difficult.  The reading level for Book 4 is at the fourth grade reading level.  Each lesson begins with a vocabulary list, then a conversation, story, activity pages, and finally an answer key. The lessons are bilingual with the word lists, conversations, and stories presented in Spanish and English.  The directions for the activity pages are in Spanish but the activities are in English.  There are two dictionaries at the back of each workbook: a Spanish dictionary and an English dictionary. There is a CD available for each workbook so the student can listen to the vocabulary lists, conversations and stories in English. The workbooks and CDs can be downloaded from our website.

Fisher Hill wants to thank all the teachers, volunteers, parents, tutors, grandparents who help  children every day with schoolwork.

As a teacher, I had wonderful parent and grandparent volunteers in my classroom.  As a kindergarten teacher with 30 children, you can imagine how I appreciated their help.  With their help, the classroom ran smoothly, and children received individual help.

On Honorary Service night, I would honor the volunteers and let everyone there know how much work they did:  organizing homework packets, organizing schoolwork for the day, listening to children read, helping individual students with math, and the list goes on.  After listing all the wonderful things, the volunteers did, I would say “And you’re probably wondering what I do all day?”  I would continue with, “Don’t worry, there’s plenty of work for everyone!!”

Reading smoothly (fluency) is an important skill. Fluency allows readers to think about what they are reading instead of having to think about sounding out words. Decoding skills need to be learned and practiced so these skills become automatic when reading words. Visualizing (making pictures in your head) helps readers remember what they have read. Good vocabulary skills help readers visualize. Readers cannot visualize a word if they do not know its meaning. All of these skills: fluency, visualizing, vocabulary, and decoding are necessary for reading comprehension.

Reading comprehension is the goal of reading. Reading is an essential skill for jobs and daily life. Many people enjoy reading and say it is one of their favorite pastimes. Others read only when it is necessary. Whichever the case may be, everyone needs to know how to read. Learning to read comes more easily to some people than others. Most people need to be taught how to read. It is different from learning how to talk. Learning to read can be a very difficult for some people, but with practice, most everyone can learn how to read.

This series has six workbooks.  Each workbook has twenty lessons.

Each lesson begins with a word list that includes words with the targeted sound for that lesson. Many of these words can also be used as vocabulary words.

The next page in the lesson works with high frequency words. These words are often misspelled so they are presented and practiced repeatedly throughout the book.

The third page in the lesson is a fill in the blank page so students can practice using the words from the word list from the first page of the lesson and the high frequency words from the second page of the lesson. There are pictures from the first page of the lesson at the end of some of the fill in the blank sentences since many sentences could have more than one answer. Students use the pictures at the end of the sentence to know which word from the word list to use.

The fourth page of the lesson practices spelling, grammar, vocabulary or writing.

The fifth page of the lesson is a word search, crossword puzzle or jumble

The last page of the lesson is an answer key.

How to use the workbooks:

When I was teaching reading and spelling, I spent two days on each new sound. I would begin the lesson by flashing sound spelling cards with the consonants and a card with the new sound. I would then dictate five words from the word list, five words from previous word lists (from the book) and two or three high frequency words. The students would write the words on their whiteboards and then read and spell the words back to me. The dialogue I used was:

Teacher: “Write the word cat.” (Students write the word.) “What word did you write?”

Students: cat

Teacher: “How do you spell cat?”

Students: “c-a-t”

I did this for each word and then I would dictate two sentences.  These sentences can come from page 2 of each lesson. This type of multisensory practices helps students to learn and remember the sounds.

After completing English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1, students can use English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker Book 1 to review the vocabulary presented in English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1.  (There are six workbook in the English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker series.) After completing the four workbooks at each level, students will have an excellent foundation in English literacy.  There are six level in the literacy program.

Are you looking for a certain workbook on Fisher Hill’s website but can’t find it?  This blog will help you find the book you’re looking for. The easiest way to find a book is to go to the Fisher Hill Store.  You can find this on the top tool bar.  Click on Fisher-Hill Store and a menu will pop up.  From that menu:

Click on Speaking and Listening if you want the workbooks for the English for the Spanish Speakers series.

Click on Reading and Spelling if you want the workbooks for the English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker series.

Click on Reading Comprehension if you want the workbooks for the English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speaker series.

Click on Writing Composition if you want the workbooks for the English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker series.

Click on Vocabulary if you want the workbooks for the English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker series.

On the top tool bar, you will also find Teacher Resources.  Click on Teacher Resources and a menu will pop up. From that menu:

As with all Fisher Hill workbooks, the activities and lessons are not overwhelming. The workbooks are explicit, systematic and very structured.  Adults like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, directions are in Spanish, most workbooks have many pictures yet the content is for adults.
