Las cinco letras vocales son a, e, i, o, u. Todas las demás letras son consonantes. Las consonantes tienen un sonido excepto la c, la gy la séstas tienen dos sonidos. Las vocales pueden tener varios sonidos en el lenguaje hablado. En ocasiones la letra “y” se usa como vocal. Las palabras se componen de sílabas (unidades de pronunciación). Algunas palabras son de una sílaba, otras tienen dos o más. Cada sílaba debe tener una vocal. Si una palabra tiene tres sílabas, entonces tendrá tres sonidos vocales.

Cada lista de palabras de las lecciones comienza con palabras que contienen el sonido hablado que se está explicando en la lección. La última palabra o palabras de la lista son del vocabulario visual u homófonos.  Al final de los libros se encuentra la traducción de las instrucciones al español.

In May 2019, Fisher Hill’s website will be bilingual! People will be able to download our workbooks from our different series for Spanish-speaking teens and adults. 

People will be able to download our popular series called English for the Spanish Speaker. This series has four workbooks.  Each book in the series has eight lessons.  In Books 1 and 2, the lessons are about every day activities. In Books 3 and 4, four lessons are about every day activities and the other four are about United States history or government.  The print in the workbooks is large.  The reading level in Book 1 is at the first and second-grade level.  The books get progressively more difficult.  The reading level for Book 4 is at the fourth-grade reading level.  Each lesson begins with a vocabulary list, then a conversation, story, activity pages, and finally an answer key. The lessons are bilingual with the word lists, conversations, and stories presented in Spanish and English.  The directions for the activity pages are in Spanish but the activities are in English.  There are two dictionaries at the back of each workbook: a Spanish dictionary and an English dictionary. There is a downloadable audio for each workbook so the student can listen to the vocabulary lists, conversations, and stories in English.

Having a well developed vocabulary is the key to reading comprehension.  The more words a person knows, the better he/she will understand the text.  For English language learners (ELLs), vocabulary development is especially important. The average native English speaker enters kindergarten with a vocabulary of 5,000 words.  The average ELL kindergartner may know 5,000 words in his or her native language, but very few words in English.  Closing the gap can be a challenge for ELLs.  

Most ELL students quickly learn to communicate verbally with peers, but ELL students must also learn academic English.  There are many Spanish English cognates that can help students learn academic English. Cognates are words in different languages that derived from the same original word or root.  About 40% of all English words have similar cognates in Spanish. Family and familia, coast and costa, lion and léon are cognates.   

Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to make a word part of your vocabulary.  Using the new words as often as possible in everyday conversations or writing will increase a person’s vocabulary

Most vocabulary words are learned from context.  The more words you’re exposed to, the better vocabulary you will have.  When reading, it is often possible to figure out the meaning of a new word from the context of the sentence or paragraph.

With the use of iPads and eReaders, it is easy to look up unknown words.  You only need to tap on the word to pull up its definition.  

In our series English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker,students get the necessary practice to increase their English vocabulary.  Many Spanish English cognates are presented in the six workbook series.  

English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speaker is part of Fisher Hill’s English literacy program for Spanish-speaking teens and adults. Fisher Hill has a six-workbook series call English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker.  This series was written to help Spanish speakers improve their English writing skills. The series uses a structured and systematic approach in teaching the different writing skills. English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker Book 1begins by teaching basic sentence structure, progresses to longer, more detailed sentences, and ends with students writing informative paragraphs. The final book in the series includes instruction and practice for writing compound and complex sentences. It also provides instruction and practice for writing essays. By the time students finish the six-book writing series, they will be able to compose informative, operational, and persuasive essays.  These six workbooks are full of writing activities and graphic organizers to help students improve their writing skills.

The workbooks are bilingual. The directions are in Spanish. The English translations for the Spanish directions are located at the back of each book. There is also an answer key at the back.  

As with all skills, writing takes practice, practice, and more practice to become proficient. The English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speaker series provides the practice and information Spanish speakers need to improve their English writing composition skills.

English Writing Composition for the Spanish Speakeris an excellent series to use in conjunction with English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speakerand English Reading Comprehension for the Spanish Speakerseries because the books in all three series use the same vocabulary. English Vocabulary for the Spanish Speakeris another six-book series that reinforces the vocabulary presented in the other three series.  By using the four series together, students get an excellent foundation in English literacy.

On our website, there are placement tests to determine which level a student should begin.  A student needs a score of 80% on the placement test to go to the next level. For example, if a student gets 60% on the placement test for level one, then that student needs to begin with level one with English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. Each level begins with the Reading and Spelling workbook.

These placement tests can be found under Teacher Resources on our website www.Fisher-Hill.com. Teacher Resources can be found on the top toolbar.  Click on Teacher Resources, then click on Reading and Spelling. Then scroll down to the placement tests. The placement tests are called Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1 and so forth.  Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1 is for level one.  The Sound Spelling Placement Tests are spelling tests to determine if a student has mastered the sounds for that level.  The teacher or volunteer gives the spelling test to the student. There are also student test forms under Teacher Resources.

Fisher Hill has a six workbook series called English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker. This reading and spelling ESL workbook series is for Spanish-speaking teens and adults. The six workbooks were written to help Spanish speakers learn to read and spell in English.  The workbooks use Orton Gillingham methods to teach reading and spelling.  Orton Gillingham uses a very systematic, structured, explicit, and multisensory approach to teach the forty-four English speech sounds to read and spell. The workbooks provide practice with phonemic awareness, which is the ability to identify individual sounds and their order within words.  Learning the different speech sounds will help students read and spell in English fluently.  Eighty-five percent (85%) of words in English are phonetic.  The workbooks also present many of the commonly used words, called sight words, that are not phonetic.

The workbooks are bilingual since the word list for each lesson is presented in English and Spanish.  There are pictures to go with many of the words in the lists. Each lesson emphasizes one or two new speech sounds.  The vowel sounds in English are different than those in Spanish, but many of the English consonant sounds are similar to those in Spanish. Most consonants in English have one sound. Vowels can make several speech sounds.  Sometimes the letter “y” is used as a vowel. 

Words are made up of syllables (units of pronunciation).  Some words have one syllable, others have two or more syllables.  Every syllable must have a vowel sound.  If a word has three syllables then it has three vowel sounds.

Each lesson’s word list begins with words that contain the speech sound that is being emphasized in that lesson.  The last two words in the list are sight words.

Practicing English speech sounds, sight words, and their spellings will help Spanish speakers learn English reading and spelling.

In English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Books 4, 5, and 6, prefixes and suffixes are introduced and practiced.

On our website, there are placement tests to determine which level a student should begin.  A student needs a score of 80% on the placement test to go to the next level. For example, if a student gets 60% on the placement test for level one, then that student needs to begin with level one with English Reading and Spelling for the Spanish Speaker Book 1. Each level begins with the Reading and Spelling workbook.

These placement tests can be found under Teacher Resources on our website www.Fisher-Hill.com.  Teacher Resources can be found on the top tool bar.  Click on Teacher Resources, then click on Reading and Spelling.  Then scroll down to the placement tests. The placement tests are called Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1 and so forth. Sound Spelling Placement Test Book 1 is for level one.  The Sound Spelling Placement Tests are spelling tests to determine if a student has mastered the sounds for that level.  The teacher or volunteer gives the spelling test to the student.  There are also student test forms under Teacher Resources.

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States. There are more than 37 million native Spanish speakers in the United States. Mexico, United States’ southern neighbor, is the largest Spanish speaking country. The United States has the second largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico.

Speaking Spanish is a great help in the workforce and in everyday life. Fisher Hill has a series called Spanish Made Fun and Easy. The series consists of two workbooks.  The workbooks were written for beginning students; for the people who wants to brush up on Spanish; or for Spanish speakers who want to learn how to read and write Spanish.  

There are twelve lessons in each workbook.  Each lesson deals with an everyday theme.  At the end of the books are two dictionaries: Spanish-English and English-Spanish.

Each lesson has eight pages.  

The first pageof each lesson is a vocabulary list.  Beginning Spanish is included as well as the vocabulary of the particular theme. The definite article is placed in front of each Spanish noun on the list letting the student know whether it is a feminine or masculine noun.  

The second pageof each lesson is a conversation that uses the new vocabulary in a common situation.  

The third pageof each lesson is a story related to the theme that reinforces the vocabulary and the conversation.  

The fourth pageof each lesson is an exercise that requires choosing a word from the vocabulary list and then writing it in a sentence that is missing that word.  

The next three pagesof the lesson are a variety of activity pages.  

At the end of each lesson,are the answers to the exercises.

It is recommended that students do one lesson per week but pupils can go through the book more rapidly if they so desire.  The speed at which a student learns Spanish depends on the student.  It would be useful to read the conversation and story out loud to gain smoothness.

Also, students should listen to Spanish television. It is very important to listen to and speak with Spanish speakers.  Students will be able to practice Spanish and also improve their accents.  Children learn quickly to speak another language because most children are not bothered by the mistakes they make in speaking. It is important to take advantage of every opportunity to speak.
