Adult Literacy

 

Fisher Hill’s English literacy program uses the Orton-Gillingham teaching method which is a multi sensory, explicit and structured approach to teaching literacy.

Fisher Hill’s English literacy program has six levels.

Each level contains:

an English Reading and Spelling workbook

English Reading Comprehension workbook

English Writing Composition workbook

and an English Vocabulary workbook

In the first three levels, when using the the English Reading and Spelling workbooks, students learn how to decode using the fotry-four English speech sounds. In the last three levels, when using the English Reading and Spelling workbooks, they learn about prefixes and suffixes. With the Reading Comprehension and Writing Composition workbooks, students practice their comprehension and writing skills at each level. With the vocabulary workbooks, students review the vocabuary from each particulary level. When students finish the six levels of the literacy program, they have an excellent foundation in English literacy.

The workbooks are not overwhelming to use. Adults like our workbooks because the pace is reasonable, print is large, directions are in Spanish, many pictures but the content is for adults. Teachers like our books because everything is ready to go! There’s an answer key at the end of each lesson. The workbooks are geared toward Spanish-speaking teens and adults but students who speak another language can very much benefit from these these books because the program is to teach English literacy. There is an English translation of the Spanish directions at the end of each book.
